Interesting Facts about Desert Storm

• There were over 9000 Iraqi deaths in Desert Storm(estimiated). Many of the deaths were due to SCUD missiles and plane bombings.
• There was only 1 U.S. soldier reported MIA during the war. Which is surprising, only one out of thousands of troops was reported missing.
• Over 115,000 air troops were flown into Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.
• The United States captured 70,000 enemy troops over the eight months that the war took place.
• The U.S. and Allied Forces lost 75 air planes, 63 U.S. and 12 Allied.
• Over 18,000 Fighter Jets were deployed all on June 17th, 1991.
• 500,000 passengers and nearly 600,000 tons of cargo were carried into the war zone on planes.

Importance of Desert Storm

What made Desert Storm an important piece of history?


The importance of Desert Storm was that countries must band together if it is to stop a greater foe. If Iraq had been able to get the oil from Kuwait, they would have become the world's leading oil supplier. They could have drastically inflated the prices of oil so we would be nearly forced to buy from them and their inflated prices. Many countries such as England, Britain, and France joined The U.S. in the attack on the Middle East. The ability to work together was the major lesson that needed to be learned in the entire war. If counties can all find a common threat, there is no problem in joining to take that threat out. Almost 30 countries joined together for Desert Storm against Iraq, they did not stand a chance. Also, a good lesson is that if you are going to stage an offence agianst another country, make sure you have allies. Iraq went in alone when we went into the battle with so many allies that Iraq ccould not lay a finger on Kuwait's oil. Big lessons like joining other countries is what the wars really need to show instead of new enemies.

Where was Desert Storm?

Desert Storm took place out in the Middle East, in many different countries. The war started in Kuwait, when Iraq invaded, but moved also moved to many bordering countries as well. The locations changed to Saudi Arabia, Iran, and even the air above them all. Most of the fighting was in the air, it started when U.S. jets were sent to Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, they were involved in many dog fights and bombings in that area. Also, U.S. ships sailed into the Persian Gulf to provide naval support, shortly after that, the ground battle started. Much fighting took place in Kuwait, but other battles raged in Saudi Arabia. Like one instance when a SCUD missile was launched at a U.S. encampment, killing 27 people. Even before we pushed the Iraqis back to Iraq, we had fought there already. Bombers had bombed many locations, like a bunker in Baghdad, which killed over several hundred civilians. The ground forces ended up knocking the Iraqi forces bak into Iraq before they accepted the ceasefire and the fighting finally ended.

The Time of Desert Storm

When did Desert Storm take place?

Desert Storm lasted 8 months, from August to March, of 1990-1991. It all started on the 17th of July, 1990, when Sadam Hussein accused Kuwait of stealing from Iraq's oil fields. On August 2nd, war was declared when Iraqi forces invaded Kuwait, later that day, Hussein was ordered to withdraw by the United Nations; he did not. six days later on the 8th, Iraq annexed Kuwait, it was declared an invalid annex by the UN the next day. On January 16th, 1991, the U.S. government made the first statement about Operation Desert Storm. January 17th, at 2:38 a.m., the air war began with U.S. planes attaking Baghdad, Kuwait, and other military targets in Iraq. January 30th, U.S. forces in the Persian Gulf exceeded 500,000 which included troops, planes, and ships. February 23th, the Army, Marines, and Arab ground forces advanced on Iraq and Kuwait. February 26th, Kuwaiti resistance leaders announced they had control over Kuwait City, the next day President Bush issued a ceasefire on Iraq. March 3rd, Iraqi leaders formally accepted the terms of the ceasefire, 10 allied POW's were realeased the next day. U.S. forces came home March 8th, the war was over. On January 16th, when the government first made a statement about Operation Desert Storm, Marlin Fitzwater announced "The liberation of Kuwait has begun..."

What is Operation Desert Storm?

Operation Desert Storm or Desert Shield was the liberation of Kuwait from Iraqi forces. It started due to Sadam Hussein's want for oil and money, he accused Kuwait of oil theft from Iraq's oil fields. Iraqi forces invaded Kuwait to take over the oil industry. The US attacked the Iraqi forces to stop them from capturing the oil rigs and becoming the country with the largest oil industry in the world. The Iraqis assaulted many diplomatic missions in Kuwait City. President Bush froze Sadam Hussein's assets and the United Nations called on him to retreat; he did not. All attempts at diplomacy failed, therefore, the US stormed the area with fighter jets, troops, and ships. President Bush ordered a ceasefire on the Iraqis, they formally accepted the United States' terms. The war of Desert Storm ended when the POWs of both sides were released later on.
